Welcome to Feral in the Barrel with Diogenes! A show, every Friday from 4-6am, where I play you two hours of great music while talking about a philosopher or philosophical topic of my choosing… today, of course, we are talking about the lovely city of Madison!!

I love Madison, Wisconsin!! However, it was not until I found the local music scence that I was truly on board with spending 5 years here. I used to sit in the backyard of my dorm, there was a big porch out there, and listen to music and write. i wrote a lot of poems that year, most of them aren't very good, but most of them are rough in a way that doesn't feel unfinished but certainly feels raw. i saw the other girls in my dorm find their place on campus, and i waited for the trap door to finally shoot open and drop me into mine.

lots of things have changed since then. i look much different, and i talk the same. i still stand with my arms and legs crossed. i met all of my dearest friends at a concert only to find out we lived too close to ignore one another. some of them moved in, some of them stayed across the street the following year. every weekend we'ed find something to do, people to be, mainly at a house show, or one of the venues down the street.

and that seems to be how I found the community that i know and love, sophmore year that trap door opened and i was exposed to this new shiny world. mainly full of just like old guitars and wet basements, i loved it. i watched the drummers light their cymbals on fire, i filled in and out of crowds, i danced and danced, i met guys who would go on to break my heart, and girls to cry about it with, and laugh at everything with.

there are many artists which have made a big impact on not only me, but the local music scene here in Madison, however I would like to unofficially officially name Graham Hunt as your "favorite local artists, favorite local artist." Most of the bands I chat with from out of town, or even just people I talk to that are from Madison, Graham Hunt and Disq are basically guarenteed to be mentioned and praised. I read this funny interview with graham hunt on johns music blog: "Did you have the full gear? Any mohawks? [john asked graham in reference to his punk days, and graham responds:] "I think at 15 I had a mohawk. I had a red one, then I think I dyed it black. I remember shaving the sides at one point and realizing I had a lumpy head, I have moles and shit on my head. I was like, Ah, damn, I don’t know if this is the look for me. But, yeah, I had all sorts of, you know, the two belts bullshit, and I had the half-black, half-green, spiky hair, studded denim leather. The whole shebang." this interview is gold.

this radio episode, while a complete shit show- that 3am redbull really shakes the mind in a way which is only comparable to opening the beer that you were keeping in your pocket while jumping on a trampoline– is a show of my appreciation to not only Madison, but it's local music scence. Today I am playing 2 and a half hours of local music, over 30 artists, and a few I had to leave unplayed because safe harbors hours got me! Hope you enjoy, sending love from Madison - diog3n3s
