Welcome to Feral in the Barrel, a show every friday from 4-6am where I play you 2 hours of music related to a philosophical topic of my choosing, today, we are talking about someone a little less philosophical, althought still highly regarded by the hipsters with paperbacks in their backpockets and walkmans hanging out of their vintage tote bags- WES ANDERSIN MY HERO!!! That's right, we are talking about one of my favorite movies, the 1999 Wes Anderson film 'Rushmore'.

i couldn't resist putting friko on this playlist, i have been listening to something worth waiting for all week and i am convinced this is one of the best modern records i have heard in a long time. cut and pasted from the about section of their website, i have been pondering these quotes from the band:

"If the general theme of the record is transit, then the title gets at the idea of always moving toward something you never quite seem to reach,” says Kapetan. “That might sound pessimistic, but maybe the reaching isn’t necessarily the point,” Minzenberger adds. “I think life is meant to bring new experiences so that your world is ever-expanding, and not about constantly striving to achieve one particular thing.”

to me, this feels obviously rushmore-ian, if that is an adjective i am allowed to use, because almost no other sentence could better describe the max fischer life style..

Rushmore. i was recommended to watch this movie by a friend i had just met, who i am certain could see through my skin straight to the bone. this movie is one i have thought of everyday since i watched it. wes anderson is great, to some, however despite my double-pierced eyebrows, i never connected with the intense symmetry and aestetic of it all. some say that his later works betray substance for style, i believe he has somehow betrayed an soul in his work to make intriguing (at best) still images. this, along with fantastic mr. fox, are the only two wes anderson movies i have seen, and maybe that makes me an unreliable narrator, but i would like to argue that this only makes my point even more convincing! i stick to my guns as a gold star wes anderson fan.

'Hes one of the worst students we've got'

this began my love for, Rushmore protagonist, max fischer. i love him like i love myself– despite it all! max fischer's character archetype is hard to pin down. he is not really known for a single thing, except perhaps blind over-confidence, charisma, ambition, and curiosity. the movie follows fischer as he navigates highschool in (and out) of a notable private school, 'Rushmore'.
